SOUND MEDICINE

Therapeutic Music

Sound Medicine offers therapeutic harp music services in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, assisted living facilities, and private homes. The goal is to pair live music and medicine to meet the needs of patients in the present moment. This can aid in creating an environment to serve the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients, which in turn helps facilitate a healing environment.  Our goal is to bring beauty, presence and the power of music into a healthcare environment.

About Therapeutic Music

Therapeutic music is acoustic music played or sung live for individuals with various health conditions. Our Certified Music Practitioners play prescriptive, customized music to address and alleviate physical, emotional, or mental issues. Our Musicians embody the awareness that bringing beauty, presence, and the power of music into a healthcare environment facilitates healing. Therapeutic musicians focus on meeting a patient’s present needs rather than having the intention of accomplishing a specific goal or outcome. Because the music is live, the practitioner can adjust and modify the music based on the reaction of the patient and their needs in the moment.

Often performed on the harp, it can be the perfect instrument for therapeutic music. It is both portable and deeply resonant. Because of this resonance, the sound can be not only heard but felt. The skin is actually a part of the hearing process as well as an extension of the inner ear. Hearing is one of the last senses to deteriorate with age, meaning that even patients who are hard of hearing or not fully awake can still reap the benefits of therapeutic music.

Benefits of Therapeutic Music

The research on the benefits of therapeutic music spans decades. Studies consistently show that live therapeutic music can influence the following:

  • Decrease stress hormone levels.

  • Reduce blood pressure.

  • Reduce anxiety in general and before surgery.

  • Influence heart rate and respiration.

  • Aid sleep and increase sleep quality.

  • Lessen the perception and increase the tolerance of pain.

  • Boost the immune system.

  • Decrease the need for painkillers.

These effects contribute to a body that is more receptive to healing, which can lead to less time in intensive/critical care, shorter overall hospital stays, and increased patient satisfaction.
